Graystone Tractor Services offers gravel and rock services. Gravel driveway construction and maintenance, gravel patios, gravel walk paths, entertainment areas,
rockscape rock for landscaping etc, we can handle it.
Choosing rockscape for front or backyard landscaped areas creates a visually appealing look. Additionally, it does not decompose like organic alternatives such as
beauty bark and so will look great for many years. An essential part of rockscape construction is the installation of a heavy landscape fabric first which will block the growth
of weeds and unwanted vegetation.
The right material depends on your needs
When it comes to gravel, rock materials and rockscape construction, choosing the right materials it very important. Different materials have different sizes,
textures, colors and feel.
Pea gravel are small diameter washed stone materials, usually available in either 1/4" and 3/8" sizes. Pea
gravel is loose stone, so it doesn't compact but rather moves around slightly when walked on, giving a somewhat slushy feeling under your feet. Pea gravel is
often used in front and rear entrances, entertainment areas, raised bed gardens and inside greenhouses etc.
Washed rock is available in various sizes, from 5/8" to 1 1/4". Like pea gravel, washed rock is a loose rock
material, which does not usually compact. It is usually crushed rock, so the rock is irregularly shaped. Loose crushed rock is often used as rockscape for groundcover
as an alternative to organic materials such as beauty bark.
River rock is usually larger sized rock, often 1-2" in size, generally with smooth, rounded edges. River rock usually comes in various colors depending on what
minerial the rock is made of.
Minus materials are used in places where compaction is needed, such as walkways,
driveways and parking areas. For driveways and parking areas, the most popular choice is 5/8" minus material. As the name suggests, minus materials contain
larger aggregate material and finer rubble.

In areas where you want looser, non compact surface, such as walkways or entertainment areas, we usually recommend a 3/8" pea gravel material.
In areas where you want to use rock material for hardscape around trees and shrubs, there are a number of choices, depending on the individual look you are trying to achieve.
Some people like the look of larger stone aggregate such as river rock, while others opt for a smaller rock diameter, such as pea gravel or something in-between.
